Broken glass…
and empty nests.
Without food.
Desolate of love.
Beer cans…
and the smell of rotten eggs.
Mini tears—
waiting on the floor
for you to return,
hoping you would love me.
This foundation of abandonment
was laid before me—
A toddler
with a bottle
and matted hair,
Nearly sick
from the cigarette smoke
in the air.
The door rings…
and I hear sirens.
Red and white flashing lights—
before me.
It’s Child Protective Services.
They have come for me.
This…
was my label date.
The day
I officially became…
a ward of the state.
